Origins of hatha yoga

 “Haṭha” means 'sun and moon' and is the foundation of all Yoga systems. Its slower and steadier pace gives the chance to the practitioners to familiarise themselves more with the pose and stay in the pose for longer experiencing the asana in a different way. The accessibility of the steadiness of Hatha yoga during all stages of life, is what makes it a calming and stress-relieving but most of all an accessible practice for all, that offers the ultimate balancing between the opposing forces in our body and mind.

In Hindu mythology and tradition, it is believed that Lord Shiva himself is the founder of Hatha yoga, who then gave the knowledge of to the Goddess Parvati. When a fish heard the entire discourse, Hatha yoga was then passed down in disciplic succession.

Today, Hatha Yoga is most often used to describe gentle, meditative with little or no flow between yoga poses. At Yoga Shala, our Hatha Yoga classes include pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation.
